Thirty-three

It's every woman's dream to have start having kids the same time as her best friend so that their children will grow up to be best friends, too. Janna never believed those things actually happened in real life, though-- only in books and movies. When her best friend Brooke announced that she was pregnant only two weeks after Janna did she couldn't be more thrilled. Maybe dreams did come true. But what was almost even more perfect and completely uncanny was when they both went into labor on the same day and gave birth to precious baby girls within hours of eachother.

And now Janna sat on the porch with her childhood best friend Brooke, swinging on the old wooden porch swing reminiscing about their little adventures as kids. Although it was mid-August, the night air was still a bit chilly but definitely refreshing after the long, hot day at the park with the girls.

"Just look at them," Brooke sighed. "Where has the time gone?"

Janna nodded and agreed. "Hmm. I was thinking the same thing. It seems like just yesterday you were wearing your hair just like Alyson's."

Brooke laughed. "Yeah and it seems like yesterday when you would dig in dirt and think that everything you found was burried treasure, just like Savannah does. Oh wait, that was yesterday!"

Janna playfully hit Brooke with the throw pillow on the porch swing. Brooke's sarcasm was one of the many traits that made up her bubbly personality.

Brooke leaned back on the swing and let out a long breath."Ugh. We are getting so old!"

Janna laughed. "Thirty-three is not old."

"Yeah, well I feel old. I mean, just listen to those two," Brooke nodded toward the opened window to where their two six-year-old girls sat giggling at the kitchen table, enjoying their favourite snack Oreos and milk. "They're talking about that little blonde-haired boy with the puppy they met at the park today."

Janna got quiet and just listened to their sweet voices and their contagious giggles.

"....yeah but I think he really liked you. He told you he said your hair was pretty. I think that means he wants to marry you," Alyson assured Savannah. Alyson was definitely Brooke's daughter--always the encouraging one. Janna had to cover her mouth with her hand to keep herself from laughing out loud and scaring the poor girls.

     "I hope so," Savannah sighed.

"What was his last name? We gotta make sure it sounds good with your name."

Savannah thought for a moment. "I don't remember. I can always ask him next time we see him at the park."

Alyson gasped. "Oh my goodness! What if he asks you out?"

"Oh no, Daddy said that I can't date until I'm married. So do you think I should ask Dylan to marry me before he gets the chance to ask me out? 'Cause I don't wanna get in trouble. Mamma and Daddy might get upset,"Savanna sounded genuine with her decision.

Janna could no longer contain her amusement. She burst out laughing so hard that tears began to gather in her eyes. Her contagious laughter elicited the same reaction from Brooke as well.

The two girls jumped in suprise when they realized that their secret conversation was being heard by outsiders. They got up from their seats at the kitchen table and marched over to the open window where their moms could hear them. Savannah was the first to speak.

She crossed her arms and put on her best expression of sterness. "Mamma, it's not polite to listen to private conversations with my best friend."

"Yeah," Alyson agreed, "We were having a private talk. We don't spy on you when you two are talking."

Brooke gave Janna a look. "Oh really? Then how did you two know that we were gonna go to the park today before we told you? That was supposed to be a suprise."

"Well, we weren't really spying," Alyson said hesitantly.

"Yeah, we just heard you say it because you were talking so loud," Savannah finished Alyson's thought.

Brooke and Janna laughed. "Okay. You win this time,"Brooke told the girls.

Janna agreed. "Mm-hm. And, Vanna, Honey. Why don't you tell Daddy your plan? I'm sure he will think it's a good idea. Don't you?"

"Really? Okay!" Savannah grabbed Alyson's hand as they ran to the living room. "Daddy! Where are you? I have this really great plan..." Her voice trailed off as they travelled deeper into the house.

Janna giggled as she leaned back. The gentle creaking of the wood filled the comfortabe silence between the two friends. "Jack is gonna love this idea," she joked.

Brooke just shook her head with a smile on her face. They looked over at eachother and just started laughing all over again.

"We may be thirty-three, but we definitely have more fun than any six-year-olds out there," Janna chuckled.
